Georgia Bulldogs Vs. Georgia Southern
ATHENS- As I type my first first post-game thoughts on the Dawgs 2008 season, I'll have to say I came away satisfied on Saturday afternoon. Not overly excited and not too concerned, just satisfied.
UGA Bulldog Offense in Mid-Season Form?
Offensively, the Dawgs went right to work on their first possession of the game, easily driving down the field for a score. I even pointed out freshman A.J. Green to my wife, as he lined up across the field for his first collegiate play and immediately caught a 30 plus yarder as if he'd been been doing it for years. Sure handed, tall and speedy, Green definitely caught my attention as I sat in the 90 plus degree heat. Knowshon Moreno picked up right where he left off last year with three touchdowns against Southern's defense. And, Matt Stafford looked razor sharp, passing for a career high 275 yards and two TD's. Another freshman, Caleb King, entered the game in the second half and promptly reeled off 12 carries for 95 yards to lead all UGA rushers. And yes, the recievers caught the ball and caught it well. I'd give a thumbs up to the entire receiving corps this week, as Kris Durham, Mohamed Massaquoi and company hauled in the pigskin with consistency.
Bulldogs' Defensive Line Impressive Vs. Southern
Defensively, I was more impressed with the D-line than any other unit on the field. They constantly controlled the line of scrimmage all day and held Georgia Southern to an average gain-per-rush of 2.9 yards. The linebackers were very active, as inside linebacker Dannelle Ellerbe snagging an interception in the endzone to halt an Eagle scoring opportunity.
I'm still undecided on the secondary, as the Dawgs gave up 188 yards through the air, including three plays that gained over twenty yards. However only one passing TD was given up on the day. There are concerns, with both DT Jeff Owens and OT Trinton Sturdivant out for the year. And several others are still nursing injuries. I didn't like the fact that 21 points were scored on the defense, however, the game was well in-hand before the Eagles got on the scoreboard.
A look into Bulldog Nation's future
A whole boat load of freshmen played and I enjoyed seeing their first taste of Sanford Stadium, even if one fumbled on his first play from scrimmage. The kid, Richard Samuel, came back and toted the rock like a man, with great straight ahead speed.
Up Next - UGA Vs. Central Michigan
So on we go to the next opponent, Central Michigan, with some question marks and a "satisfying" start. In the words of Munson, I hope "ole lady luck" will begin to shine on the Dawgs and get some of these injuries healed up! Go Dawgs!!
