Athens,GA- With the 2009 edition of the Georgia Bulldogs set to hit the practice fields this week, the team enters practice with a renewed emphasis on "TEAMWORK", in every sense of the word. While this team's identity will not truly be known until the season begins, here are 5 questions to be answered in the coming weeks:

1) Will the offensive line live up to expectations and give the Dawgs some "bite" up front?

2) Will the defense return it's swagger and be the traditionally strong unit expected of a Georgia Defense?

3) What will happen at the Running Back position? (Will a front-runner emerge? Will it be running back-by-committee? Will newcomer Washaun Ealey be a factor?)

4) Who will step forward at wide receiver to compliment star A.J. Green?

5) Who will emerge at Defensive End and can the Dawgs "bring the heat" to opposing Quarterbacks?

Athens, GA-   An Athens icon went down this morning, as the Georgia Theater burned down. With only the walls and marquee left, the smoke filled the Athens skyline all day and left many, many memories behind. With the likes of R.E.M, John Mayer, Dave Matthews, Corey Smith and countless other musical acts taking the stage over the years, the Theater was as much of an Athens tradition as any other venue in town. I can't begin to count the nights I personally spent the wee hours of a Sunday morning partying down after a Georgia football game.
As the saying goes, "It's great to be a Georgia Bulldog on a Saturday night.." And, if you've ever spent a night at the Georgia Theater listening to the Kinchafoonee Cowboys after a Georgia home game, then you know the true meaning of that!!!

A whole boat load of publicity has been given to the famous Georgia "celebration" at last years game, as Georgia whooped Florida 42-30.  Florida has stewed about it for an entire year and coach Urban Meyer referred to himself in third-person when he put in his book, "It will forever be in the mind of Urban Meyer...and Urban Meyer plans to do something about it and it's going to be a big deal...." I guess the guy has poor self-esteem if he has to refer to himself like that. Urban called the celebration a bad deal, but, it was ultimately a brilliant coaching strategy by Georgia coach Mark Richt. (Did I mention the final score was 42-30 Georgia? ...enough said!!)

Dawgs on Offense

Controlling the clock and making big plays will be crucial when Georgia has the ball. The Bulldogs lead the SEC in total offense and first downs, and, the Dawgs are second in the conference in scoring, third-down conversions and time of possession. What does this mean? All of these stats add up to an offense that can move the ball, keep drives alive, keep possession of the ball and ultimately.....score. With Georgia and Florida having the top two scoring offenses in the SEC, this game could have a whole lot of offensive fireworks!!! While, Florida's defense is very good, Georgia must control the ball to keep the Gator offense off of the field. To accomplish this, offensive coordinator Mike Bobo must keep the Gator defense off balance. The Dawgs must put up points with Matt Stafford, A.J Green, Mohamed Massaquoi and Knowshon Moreno leading the way. The Dawgs must bring their "A-game" and hit the big plays on Saturday.

Dawgs on Defense

Defensively, the Dawgs must limit Florida's big plays and win the turnover battle. Florida's offense has thrived on big plays, with speedy playmakers Chris Rainey, Jeffrey Demps, Percy Harvin and Louis Murphy. In Florida's last two games (vs LSU and Kentucky), the Gators had at least two touchdowns of 20 or more yards. In a loss to Mississippi, Florida had one touchdown that went for more that 20 yards. Also, in Florida's last two games, they've won the turnover battle 2 to 4. In the loss to Ole Miss, Florida lost the turnover battle 3 to 1. Florida has stuck with the run lately, spreading the ball around to it's playmakers. The Dawgs must match Florida's speed, with speedy linebackers (Rennie Curran) and get penetration with the D-line (Geno Atkins) to disrupt the Gator's Spread offense. Florida leads the SEC in turnover ratio and the Dawgs must turn the table and make Florida cough up the ball.

GO DAWGS!!! LET'S GET IT ON!!!!

1. Georgia's air attack vs the South Carolina secondary- During the pre-season there was much hype over the South Carolina front seven.  So deep on the defensive line that DE Eric Norwood was moved to linebacker to team with standout LB Jasper Brinkley! Amazingly enough, their run defense has been their weakness thus far this season. The Gamecocks have given up only 70 passing yards per game, however. And, Matthew Stafford will face his toughest test of the young season. Defensive backs Captain Munnerlyn and Emanuel Cook rank among the top talents in the SEC and have helped hold opponents to less than a 40% pass completion percentage, so far. The Dawgs receivers must continue to slice through the defense like a knife through chicken......so to speak.

2. Kicking game- Freshman kicker Blair Walsh has been lights out in the early going for the Dawgs. He nailed his first collegiate kick from over 50 yards out and has been perfect on extra points. The Georgia-South Carolina series has a history of close games and who knows if this one may come down to a last minute field goal? Walsh must continue his solid performance in front of his first hostile crowd in Columbia on Saturday.

3. Defense must Finish The Drill-  The Bulldog's defense has taken care of business in the first two games, however, there have been lapses from time to time. Central Michigan's Heisman-hopeful quarterback found holes in the defensive secondary and orchestrated a couple of scoring drives to bring his team within 2 scores of a tie ballgame last weekend. Though South Carolina does not have the same caliber of quarterback, they do have standouts in wide receiver Kenny McKinley and tight end Jared Cook. The Dawgs must "bring it" for 4 quarters and keep Steve Spurrier's offense in check!

Potential Breakout Performance?

High School all-everything receiver A.J. Green has been silky smooth in his first two games as a Georgia Bulldog.  While his stats haven't been eye-popping, he has been very impressive as he has worked his way into the offensive rotation.  How sweet would it be for the true freshman to have his "coming out party" in his home state ,in front of a nationally televised audience? Mark Richt plucked the kid right out from under Spurrier and Green never waivered on his decision to commit to Georgia.  Humble, eager to learn and talented, A.J. Green has the potential to stretch the field and create some fireworks inside Williams-Brice Stadium this weekend!

Georgia Offense continues to roll

Offensively, the Dawgs put up impressive numbers for the second straight week. There were six plays that went for twenty plus yards. Moreno went airborne on a "highlight reel" run in the second half, as he leaped over a Chippewa defender. He scored three touchdowns on the day and brought his season total to 6 TD's. Matthew Stafford was an efficient 18-for-28,  passing for 213 yards and 2 more TD's. Mohammed Massaquoi and Michael Moore each had five catches. And, Massaquoi smoked the Central Michigan secondary for a 54 yard score in the third quarter.

Dawgs contain Dan LeFevour and the Central Michigan Offense

Defensively, I am still concerned about our ability to defend the pass. Heisman Candidate Dan LeFevour managed to pass for 250 yards and 2 touchdowns.  His 32 yard pass for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter brought the Chippewa's to within two possessions of a tie ballgame.  The reason for concern, I felt, was the fact that even though LeFevour is hyped as a Heisman Candidate, most of his stats have come against teams in the MAC conference. Not exactly the same talent level as the SEC...... On the flip side, the bulldog defense stuffed the run all day. LeFevour was actually the leading rusher for Central Michigan with only 19 yards!!! The dominant run defense contributed to the inflated pass defense numbers, as Central Michigan attempted 44 passes compared to only 22 rush attempts. So, I will not write off the pass defense just yet. It's a long season and there will be a whole lot of opportunities in the coming weeks for the Dawgs to bring it.

Final Thoughts

Stafford continues to make throw-after-throw and the Georgia offense has put up 101 points just two games into the season. The receivers have caught the ball well as the Dawgs have the ability to score from anywhere on the field. I love the 1-2-3 punch of running backs Knowshon Moreno, Caleb King and Richard Samuel. These guys have juked, wiggled and ran through both defenses they've faced this season and no one has consistently stopped them!!! The defense has given up some yards, but, a dominant performance hasn't been necessary thus far, as the offense is currently #1 among Southeastern Conference teams.

Up Next - South Carolina

The Dawgs travel to Columbia, SC to face Steve Spurrier's Gamecocks for the SEC opener on Saturday, September 13th. The visor-tossing Spurrier stole one from UGA last year, as linebacker Jasper Brinkley intercepted a Matthew Stafford pass in the closing minutes of the game.  This will be the biggest test the Dawgs have faced this year, as South Carolina always brings their "A" game against Georgia.  With Vanderbilt beating the Gamecocks in last week's Thursday night game, the Dawgs have to be licking their chops to seek sweet revenge in Week #3!!!!!!
